Chanakya

Chanakya was an ancient Indian teacher, strategist, and royal adviser traditionally credited with helping Chandragupta Maurya establish the Mauryan Empire. He is also associated with the political treatise Arthashastra and the collection of maxims called Chanakya Niti.

Chandragupta Maurya: The founder of the Mauryan Empire, who ruled much of the Indian subcontinent in the late fourth century BCE. Tradition casts him as Chanakya’s student and partner in founding Mauryan rule.
Magadha: An ancient kingdom in eastern India that became a major center of power and the base of the Mauryan Empire. Chanakya’s political story unfolds around the kingdom Chandragupta wrested from the Nandas.
Kautilya: The name under which the Arthashastra identifies its author, traditionally equated with Chanakya. The identification connects Chanakya’s remembered biography to the treatise’s authorship.
