Changbai Mountains

The Changbai Mountains are a volcanic range along the China–North Korea border, centered on Mount Paektu. Their highlands include the sources of the Songhua, Tumen, and Yalu rivers.

Changbaishan basalt plateau: A broad volcanic plateau in northeastern China formed by extensive basaltic eruptions. Its lava flows built much of the range’s surrounding upland terrain.
Korean mythology: The traditional body of myths and legends associated with Korean culture and history. Mount Paektu, within the range, is central to foundational Korean origin traditions.
Changbai Mountain Biosphere Reserve: A UNESCO biosphere reserve in northeastern China encompassing forests and alpine habitats of the Changbai Mountains. It provides an international conservation framework for the range’s ecosystems.
Greater Khingan: A mountain range in northeastern China forming part of the divide between the Northeast China Plain and the Mongolian Plateau. It is another major upland of Northeast China, but lies west of the Changbai range.
Millennium Eruption: A major eruption of Mount Paektu around the tenth century that deposited tephra across northeastern Asia. This eruption is the best-known event in the mountains’ volcanic record.
Dangun: The legendary founder of Gojoseon, traditionally regarded as the first Korean kingdom. Tradition places Dangun’s birth on Mount Paektu, giving the range ancestral significance.
Baekdu Daegan Mountain System Protected Areas: A UNESCO World Heritage property protecting parts of Korea’s Baekdu-daegan mountain ridge and its ecosystems. It links conservation on the Korean side to the larger mountain chain rooted at Paektu.
Lesser Khingan: A mountain range in northeastern China and the Russian Far East, north of the Songhua River basin. It shares the regional setting but lacks Mount Paektu’s defining summit caldera.
Changbai Mountains forest ecosystem: A temperate forest ecosystem spanning elevations and habitats in the Changbai Mountains. Long-term uplift, climate, and volcanic soils shaped its distinctive vegetation zones.
North Korea: A country in East Asia occupying the northern half of the Korean Peninsula. The range and Mount Paektu form part of its border landscape and national symbolism.
