Changdeokgung

Changdeokgung is a royal palace in Seoul built during Korea’s Joseon dynasty. Its buildings and landscaped rear garden reflect a design adapted to the surrounding terrain.

Injeongjeon: The main throne hall of Changdeokgung, used for major royal ceremonies and state occasions. This central hall anchors the palace’s formal ceremonial precinct.
Taejong of Joseon: The third king of Joseon, who ordered the construction of Changdeokgung in the early fifteenth century. His building project established the palace as a royal residence.
Joseon court: The monarch, royal household, officials, and institutions that governed Joseon Korea. Changdeokgung housed the people and ceremonies of this governing community.
World Heritage Convention: The 1972 international treaty establishing UNESCO’s system for protecting cultural and natural heritage. Its framework underlies Changdeokgung’s international heritage recognition.

Gyeongbokgung: A major Joseon royal palace in Seoul, founded as the dynasty’s principal palace in 1395. Its formal central status contrasts with Changdeokgung’s terrain-adapted layout and later role as a residence.
