Chao Phraya River

Thailand’s major river, formed in central Thailand by the meeting of the Ping and Nan rivers. It flows south through Bangkok and empties into the Gulf of Thailand.

Ping River: A major river in northern Thailand that joins the Nan River at Nakhon Sawan to form the Chao Phraya. Its waters form the Chao Phraya’s western headwater branch.
Chao Phraya Express Boat: A passenger boat service operating on the Chao Phraya in Bangkok and nearby areas. It uses the river as a working route through the capital.
Kingdom of Ayutthaya: A Thai kingdom centered on Ayutthaya that lasted from 1351 until its destruction in 1767. Its capital prospered at a strategic junction of the Chao Phraya river system.
Central Thailand: The central region of Thailand, encompassing the Chao Phraya plain and the country’s capital region. The river’s fertile plain and transport routes have concentrated settlement here.
Mekong River: A major transboundary river in Southeast Asia that flows through or along six countries before reaching the South China Sea. Unlike the Chao Phraya, it crosses national borders and drains much of mainland Southeast Asia.
Nan River: A river in northern Thailand that flows south to meet the Ping River at Nakhon Sawan. Its confluence with the Ping marks the Chao Phraya’s beginning.
Irrigation in Thailand: The managed delivery of water to agricultural land across Thailand. Canals connected to the river distribute water across the central rice-growing plain.
Thonburi Kingdom: A Thai kingdom centered at Thonburi that ruled from 1767 to 1782 after Ayutthaya fell. Its riverside capital stood on the west bank of the Chao Phraya.
Chao Phraya freshwater swamp forests: A lowland freshwater wetland ecosystem native to the Chao Phraya basin, now extensively altered by agriculture and urban development. Seasonal flooding once sustained wetlands along the river’s plain.
Mae Klong River: A river in western Thailand that flows through Kanchanaburi and reaches the Gulf of Thailand. It is a separate Gulf-draining river west of the Chao Phraya basin.
