Chapultepec Peace Accords

The Chapultepec Peace Accords were agreements signed by El Salvador’s government and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front in 1992, ending the country’s civil war and setting reforms for peace.

United Nations Observer Mission in El Salvador: A United Nations mission that verified implementation of the Salvadoran peace agreements from 1991 to 1995. It monitored ceasefire compliance and the implementation of key provisions.
Salvadoran Civil War: A conflict fought from 1979 to 1992 between El Salvador’s government and leftist insurgents led by the FMLN. The accords brought this twelve-year conflict to an end.
National Civilian Police (El Salvador): The civilian police institution established in El Salvador as part of the peace settlement. Its creation replaced wartime security structures with a new civilian force.
La Palma Dialogue: A 1984 meeting between Salvadoran President José Napoleón Duarte and representatives of the FDR-FMLN coalition. It began dialogue but did not produce the comprehensive settlement achieved in 1992.
Ceasefire: An agreement or order to suspend fighting, usually between armed parties. The accords established the end of hostilities and a schedule for ending military operations.
José Napoleón Duarte: A Salvadoran politician who served as president from 1984 to 1989 during the civil war. His government pursued dialogue with the insurgency before the final negotiations.
FMLN: A Salvadoran political party that grew out of the former guerrilla coalition of the same name. The accords enabled the former insurgency to register as a political party.
Salvadoran Civil War peace negotiations: The series of talks between El Salvador’s government and the FMLN that sought to end the civil war. The accords were the final result of this longer negotiation process.
Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front: A Salvadoran left-wing political and former guerrilla organization formed in 1980. Its forces demobilized and the organization entered electoral politics under the accords.
Alfredo Cristiani: A Salvadoran politician who served as president from 1989 to 1994. His government negotiated and signed the final peace agreements.
