Charity

Charity is voluntary giving of money, goods, time, or services to help people in need. It is often motivated by compassion, moral duty, or religious commitment.

Mutual aid: Voluntary cooperation through which people provide one another with material, social, or practical support. Unlike one-way charitable giving, mutual aid emphasizes reciprocal support among participants.
Almsgiving: Giving money or goods to people in need, especially as a religious or moral duty. Almsgiving is charity understood as a personal obligation to relieve poverty.
Philanthropy: The organized use of private wealth or resources to promote public welfare. Philanthropy often operates through institutions and large-scale funding rather than personal acts of aid.
Poverty: A condition in which people lack sufficient resources to meet basic needs and participate in society. Poverty is a major condition charity seeks to relieve, though donations alone rarely remove its structural causes.
Poor relief: Public and private measures that provide assistance to people unable to support themselves. Historical poor relief shows how charitable practices became part of broader systems of assistance.
Food bank: An organization that collects, stores, and distributes food to people facing food insecurity. Food banks turn donations into emergency food assistance.
Tzedakah: The Jewish religious obligation to give aid and pursue justice, commonly expressed through charitable giving. Tzedakah connects aid to justice and duty rather than treating it only as generosity.
Welfare state: A system in which government provides social protections and services to support citizens' well-being. Public welfare makes assistance an institutional responsibility rather than relying on voluntary donations.
Dependency theory: A theory that aid and economic relationships can reinforce dependence between wealthier and poorer societies. Critiques of charity ask whether aid can preserve unequal power instead of enabling self-determination.
Elizabethan Poor Law: English legislation enacted in 1601 that assigned parishes responsibility for aiding poor residents. It formalized local responsibility for relief alongside private and religious giving.
