Charlemagne

Charlemagne (c. 747–814) was king of the Franks and Lombards and emperor from 800. His conquests and reforms shaped the political and cultural foundations of medieval western Europe.

Carolingian dynasty: A Frankish ruling dynasty that governed much of western Europe from the eighth to tenth centuries. Charlemagne inherited and expanded the dynasty’s power.
Missi dominici: Royal envoys sent in pairs to inspect local officials and communicate the ruler’s commands. They carried Charlemagne’s oversight into distant regions.
Alcuin of York: An English scholar and cleric who taught at Charlemagne’s court and helped advance educational reform. His scholarship influenced the court’s program of learning.
Coronation of Charlemagne: The ceremony in Rome on Christmas Day 800 in which Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne emperor. It marked Charlemagne’s elevation to imperial status in the West.
Saxon Wars: A series of wars and uprisings between the Franks and Saxons, lasting from 772 to 804. The protracted conflict shows the coercive costs of expansion and conversion.
Pepin the Short: King of the Franks from 751 to 768 and father of Charlemagne. His kingdom and royal authority passed to Charlemagne.
Capitulary: A medieval ruler’s decree divided into short chapters or provisions. Charlemagne used capitularies to issue instructions and organize governance.
Einhard: A Frankish courtier and scholar who wrote a biography of Charlemagne after the emperor’s death. His account is a central source for Charlemagne’s life and reputation.
Treaty of Verdun: The 843 agreement that divided the Carolingian Empire among the sons of Louis the Pious. Its partition ended the empire’s political unity under Charlemagne’s successors.
Siege of Pavia: The Frankish siege of the Lombard capital that ended in 774 with its capture by Charlemagne. Pavia’s fall secured Charlemagne’s rule over the Lombard kingdom.
