Charles Horton Cooley

Charles Horton Cooley was an American sociologist whose theories of the looking-glass self and primary groups explained how social relationships shape individual identity and society.

Looking-glass self: A theory that people form self-concepts partly by imagining how others perceive and judge them. Cooley’s best-known account of how social interaction shapes self-conception.
Self-concept: A person’s organized beliefs and evaluations about who they are. In Cooley’s account, imagined social judgments contribute to a person’s view of themselves.
George Herbert Mead: An American philosopher and social psychologist who theorized the social development of mind and self. Mead developed a related account of how selves emerge through interaction and shared symbols.
