Charles I of Austria

Charles I was the last emperor of Austria and king of Hungary, ruling from 1916 until the Habsburg monarchy dissolved in 1918.

Dissolution of Austria-Hungary: The breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the end of the First World War. Charles’s rule ended as national movements and wartime defeat dismantled the empire.
Sixtus Affair: The 1917 secret effort by Charles I to negotiate a separate peace with the Allied powers through Prince Sixtus of Bourbon-Parma. The affair exposed Charles’s clandestine attempt to end the war without Germany.
