Charles I of England

Charles I ruled England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1625 until his execution in 1649. His disputes with Parliament over taxation, religion, and royal authority helped provoke the English Civil War.

James VI and I: King of Scotland who became James I of England in 1603, uniting the crowns under one monarch. Charles inherited the English and Scottish crowns from his father in 1625.
Personal Rule: The period from 1629 to 1640 when Charles I governed without calling the English Parliament. Charles's attempt to rule alone made taxation and royal authority central points of conflict.
John Pym: An English politician who led parliamentary opposition to Charles I in the early 1640s. Pym helped organize resistance to royal policies and the Grand Remonstrance.

Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford: An English statesman and Charles I's chief minister, executed by Parliament in 1641. His prosecution weakened the king's government and sharpened their confrontation.
Execution of Charles I: The beheading of Charles I outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall on 30 January 1649. His execution made the defeat of the king irreversible and shocked European monarchies.
