Charles III of Navarre

Charles III, called Charles the Noble, was king of Navarre from 1387 to 1425. He strengthened royal administration and commissioned the Palace of Olite.

Kingdom of Navarre: A medieval kingdom centered in the western Pyrenees, spanning territories on both sides of the mountain range. Its institutions and borders formed the realm Charles governed.
Royal chancery: A royal office responsible for drafting, authenticating, and issuing official documents. A developed chancery helped make royal decisions durable and administratively effective.
Treaty of Briones: A 1379 agreement that imposed terms on Navarre after conflict with Castile. The settlement inherited from his father constrained Navarre’s foreign policy early in Charles’s reign.
Blanche I of Navarre: Queen of Navarre from 1425 to 1441 and daughter of Charles III. She succeeded Charles and carried his dynasty into the next reign.
House of Évreux: A French noble dynasty that ruled Navarre from 1328 to 1441. Charles inherited the Navarrese crown through this dynasty.
Royal administration: The offices and procedures through which a monarch governs a realm. Charles strengthened these institutions during his reign.
Navarrese Civil War: A dynastic and political conflict in Navarre that began in 1451, after Charles III’s death. Its later instability contrasts with the relative consolidation achieved under Charles.
John II of Aragon: King of Aragon from 1458 to 1479 and king of Navarre through his marriage to Blanche I. His later rule over Navarre helped trigger conflict over the succession Charles had secured.
Charles II of Navarre: King of Navarre from 1349 to 1387, known as Charles the Bad. His father’s turbulent reign preceded Charles III’s efforts to stabilize royal rule.
Crown of Aragon: A composite monarchy joining the Kingdom of Aragon with other territories under one ruler. Dynastic diplomacy connected Charles’s family to neighboring Iberian courts.
