Charles Simonyi

Charles Simonyi is a Hungarian-American computer scientist who led development of Microsoft Word and Excel and later flew as a private spaceflight participant.

Bill Gates: Bill Gates is an American businessperson and software developer who co-founded Microsoft. Simonyi joined Microsoft in 1981 and worked under Gates during the company’s expansion.
Microsoft Word: Microsoft Word is a word-processing application developed by Microsoft. Simonyi led the team that developed Word, first released in 1983.
WYSIWYG: WYSIWYG describes editing systems that display documents in a form resembling their printed output. The principle shaped Bravo and later word-processing software developed by Simonyi.
Private spaceflight: Private spaceflight is space travel funded or operated by nongovernmental organizations and individuals. Simonyi became one of the first people to pay for repeated visits to orbit.
Richard Brodie: Richard Brodie is an American programmer and an early developer of Microsoft Word. Brodie worked with Simonyi on the first version of Microsoft Word.
Microsoft Excel: Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application developed by Microsoft. Simonyi led the development of Excel, released for the Macintosh in 1985.
Hungarian notation: Hungarian notation is a naming convention that encodes a variable’s type or purpose in its name. Simonyi devised this convention at Xerox PARC, and it spread through Microsoft programming.
Soyuz TMA-10: Soyuz TMA-10 was a Russian spacecraft that carried a crew to the International Space Station in 2007. It carried Simonyi on his first orbital flight.
Butler Lampson: Butler Lampson is an American computer scientist known for contributions to operating systems and personal computing. Lampson influenced Simonyi’s ideas about programming environments and software development.
Bravo (word processor): Bravo is an early WYSIWYG word processor created at Xerox PARC in the 1970s. Simonyi helped create Bravo before bringing its editing ideas to Microsoft.
