Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor

Charles V (1500–1558) was a Habsburg ruler who governed the Holy Roman Empire and the Spanish monarchy, presiding over a far-flung composite empire during the Reformation and Ottoman expansion.

Habsburg monarchy: A Central European dynastic monarchy that ruled territories across Europe and overseas from the late Middle Ages to 1918. Charles inherited its Austrian lands and used its dynastic network to assemble his composite dominions.
Philip the Handsome: A Habsburg archduke who became king consort of Castile through his marriage to Joanna of Castile. His marriage joined Habsburg dynastic ambitions to the Castilian succession Charles inherited.

Sack of Rome (1527): The 1527 looting of Rome by mutinous troops of the army serving Charles V. The episode exposed how little Charles could control an army whose arrears and religious tensions fueled violence.
