Charles XI of Sweden

Charles XI was king of Sweden from 1660 to 1697. He strengthened the crown through the reduction of noble estates, military and fiscal reforms, and the establishment of royal absolutism.

Reduction (Sweden): The Swedish Crown’s recovery of estates previously granted to nobles and other holders. The reduction restored revenue and land that financed Charles XI’s stronger monarchy.
Charles X Gustav of Sweden: King of Sweden from 1654 to 1660, whose wars expanded Swedish territory before his death. His death left Charles XI, his young son, to inherit the crown and a costly empire.
Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie: A Swedish statesman who led the regency government during much of Charles XI’s minority. His regency became a target of criticism as Charles XI took control and pursued reform.
Swedish Empire: The early modern Swedish state and its territories around the Baltic Sea, at its greatest extent in the seventeenth century. Charles XI governed this far-flung realm while reducing its fiscal and administrative weaknesses.

Swedish absolutism: The concentration of legislative and executive authority in Sweden’s monarch, established under Charles XI. The 1680 Riksdag’s declaration made royal authority the political outcome of his reforms.
Treaty of Copenhagen (1660): A treaty ending the Dano-Swedish War of 1658–1660 and restoring some Danish territory. It settled a war inherited at Charles XI’s accession but left Sweden under strategic pressure.
