Charter 77

Charter 77 was a Czechoslovak dissident initiative launched in 1977 that urged the government to honor its human-rights commitments and international agreements.

Anticharter: A 1977 state-organized campaign in which prominent Czechoslovak figures publicly condemned Charter 77. It was the government’s staged response to the declaration, using public signatures to portray dissent as isolated.
Václav Havel: A Czech playwright, dissident, and political leader who became a leading figure in Charter 77. His essays and public advocacy helped explain the initiative’s moral and political purpose.
