Chatbot

A software application that conducts conversation with users through text or speech, using scripted responses, artificial intelligence, or both.

Natural language processing: Computational methods for analyzing, interpreting, and generating human language. Many chatbots use language processing to map user messages to intents and responses.
Conversational user interface: An interface in which people interact with software through natural-language conversation. Chatbots are a software form of this broader interface design.
Customer service: Assistance that organizations provide to people before, during, or after using their products or services. Organizations use chatbots to answer routine questions and route support requests.
Rule-based system: A system that makes decisions by applying explicitly specified rules to inputs. Scripted chatbots rely on fixed rules, while learned models infer patterns from data.
ELIZA effect: The tendency to attribute understanding or human qualities to simple computer programs. Conversational language can make users perceive understanding that a chatbot does not possess.
Intent recognition: The task of identifying the goal expressed in a user's message. Intent-based chatbots choose actions or answers by classifying what users want.
Application programming interface: A defined way for software components to communicate and exchange data. Chatbots use APIs to retrieve information or perform actions in other services.
Virtual assistant: Software that performs tasks or provides information through spoken or written commands. Personal assistants are chatbots designed to manage practical tasks across services.
Search engine: A system that finds and ranks information in response to a query. Search engines return ranked sources; chatbots typically respond in conversational turns.
Automation bias: The tendency to over-rely on automated recommendations or decisions. Users may accept chatbot answers without checking their accuracy or source.
