Chaulukya dynasty

The Chaulukya dynasty, also called the Solankis, ruled much of Gujarat from the tenth to thirteenth centuries. Its reign shaped regional politics, temple architecture, and Jain patronage.

Mularaja: A ruler traditionally regarded as the founder of the Chaulukya dynasty in Gujarat. His accession around the mid-tenth century marks the dynasty’s emergence.
Bhima I: A Chaulukya ruler of Gujarat whose reign began in 1022. His reign included the attack on Somnath by Mahmud of Ghazni.

Solanki: A name used for the Chaulukya dynasty of Gujarat and for communities associated with that lineage. It is the dynasty’s widely used alternative name.
Modhera Sun Temple: An eleventh-century Hindu temple in Gujarat dedicated to Surya, the sun god. It preserves a major example of temple construction during Chaulukya rule.
Gurjara-Pratihara Empire: A major North Indian empire that flourished from the eighth to tenth centuries. Its weakening helped create room for regional powers such as the Chaulukyas.
Kumarapala: A twelfth-century Chaulukya king associated with Jain patronage and the minister Hemachandra. His reign links royal authority with the dynasty’s celebrated Jain cultural life.
