Chauvet Cave

Chauvet Cave is a decorated cave in the Ardèche region of southern France, renowned for figurative paintings made roughly 36,000 years ago.

Chauvet Lion Panel: A Chauvet Cave composition showing a group of lions pursuing or surrounding prey animals. It brings the cave’s movement and animal observation into a single dramatic scene.
Paleolithic cave painting: Painting made on the walls or ceilings of caves by people during the Paleolithic. Chauvet Cave is an exceptionally early and richly preserved example of this practice.

Upper Paleolithic: The later part of the Paleolithic, marked by diverse stone tools and widespread symbolic artifacts. The cave’s paintings belong to this long period of human history.
Altamira Cave: A cave in northern Spain famous for Upper Paleolithic paintings, especially polychrome bison. Together, Altamira and Chauvet show the geographical and stylistic range of Ice Age cave art.
Chauvet Horses Panel: A Chauvet Cave panel depicting several horses, including four prominent heads facing left. The horses display the modeling and expressive detail characteristic of the cave’s paintings.
Red ochre: A naturally occurring iron-oxide pigment that produces red, rust, or brown hues. Red pigment appears in several Chauvet Cave images and markings.
