Chavín culture

An early Andean civilization centered at Chavín de Huántar in Peru, influential across the region during the first millennium BCE. Its distinctive art combined human, feline, serpent, and bird imagery.

Chavín de Huántar: An archaeological site in Peru’s Ancash region, known for monumental stone architecture and ceremonial galleries. The site was the culture’s principal ceremonial and architectural center.
Old Temple of Chavín de Huántar: The earlier monumental temple complex at Chavín de Huántar, built around a sunken circular plaza and interior galleries. Its enclosed galleries and plaza provided a setting for controlled ceremonial experiences.
Raimondi Stele: A carved stone slab from Chavín de Huántar depicting a supernatural figure holding two staffs. Its elaborate staff-bearing figure exemplifies the culture’s monumental religious imagery.
Early Horizon (Andes): An archaeological period in the central Andes, conventionally dated to about 900–200 BCE. Chavín’s florescence falls within the period archaeologists call the Early Horizon.
