Chechen language

Chechen is a Northeast Caucasian language spoken chiefly by the Chechen people in Chechnya and neighboring regions. Its complex sound system and rich consonant inventory distinguish it within the Nakh branch.

Nakh languages: A branch of Northeast Caucasian languages comprising Chechen, Ingush, and Bats. Chechen is one of the branch’s three languages.
Ejective consonant: A consonant produced with a glottalic egressive airstream, created by raising the closed glottis. Ejectives are among the consonant types found in Chechen.
Nakh peoples: Ethnic groups of the central Caucasus that include Chechens, Ingush, and Batsbi. Chechen developed as the language of one of the Nakh peoples.
Chechen language policy: Government measures concerning Chechen’s official status, teaching, and public use. Policy determines the institutional settings in which Chechen can be used.
Georgian language: A Kartvelian language spoken chiefly in Georgia and written with the Georgian script. Georgian neighbors Chechen geographically but belongs to a separate language family.
Northeast Caucasian languages: A language family native to the northeastern Caucasus, with several dozen languages. This family contains the Nakh branch to which Chechen belongs.
Uvular consonant: A consonant articulated with the back of the tongue against or near the uvula. Uvular articulations contribute to Chechen’s broad consonant inventory.
Chechen Arabic alphabet: An Arabic-derived script historically used to write Chechen. It records an earlier stage of Chechen literacy before modern script reforms.
Chechen-language education: Teaching and learning conducted in or about the Chechen language. Schools transmit literacy and formal Chechen to younger generations.
Avar language: A Northeast Caucasian language spoken chiefly in Dagestan. Avar shares the broad family with Chechen but belongs to a different branch.
