Chechen Republic of Ichkeria

The Chechen Republic of Ichkeria was a self-declared state that claimed independence from Russia from 1991, before Russian forces re-established control in the early 2000s.

Dzhokhar Dudayev: A Soviet air force general who became the first president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. He led the independence movement and declared Chechnya’s separation from Russia in 1991.
First Chechen War: The 1994–1996 war between Russia and Chechen forces seeking independence. Ichkeria survived the Russian invasion and regained de facto independence through this war.
Aslan Maskhadov: A Chechen military commander who became president of Ichkeria in 1997. He sought to govern after the First Chechen War and resisted the renewed Russian campaign.
