Chechen–Russian conflict

A series of armed conflicts between Russia and Chechen separatists over Chechnya’s independence, including the First and Second Chechen Wars.

First Chechen War: A war fought from 1994 to 1996 between Russia and Chechen forces seeking independence. It began the post-Soviet armed struggle over Chechnya’s status.
Chechen independence movement: A political movement seeking Chechnya’s separation from Russia. Its independence goal drove the central dispute.
Dzhokhar Dudayev: The first president of independent Chechnya’s unrecognized government and a leader during the First Chechen War. He led Chechnya’s initial post-Soviet independence government.
