Chemical engineering

Chemical engineering designs and operates processes that transform raw materials into useful products. It combines chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and economics to make those processes safe, efficient, and scalable.

Chemical process: A sequence of physical or chemical operations that converts feed materials into products. Chemical engineering turns these sequences into practical, integrated production systems.
Mass balance: An accounting equation stating that material entering a system equals material leaving plus accumulation or reaction effects. It tracks where feedstocks, products, and waste go through a process.
Petroleum refining: The industrial separation and conversion of crude oil into fuels and other products. Refineries combine separations and reactions to produce fuels and chemical feedstocks.
George E. Davis: An English chemical engineer whose 1901 lectures helped establish chemical engineering as a distinct discipline. His lectures organized industrial practice around recurring operations rather than individual products.
Industrial ecology: The study of material and energy flows through industrial systems and their interactions with the environment. It examines how production systems can reduce waste and use resources more efficiently.
Chemical reactor: Equipment in which chemical reactions occur under controlled conditions. Reactors are where process design meets reaction kinetics and selectivity.
Energy balance: An accounting of energy entering, leaving, and accumulating in a system. It determines heating, cooling, and energy requirements across process equipment.
Polymer engineering: The design and production of materials made from long-chain molecules called polymers. Chemical engineers develop processes for producing and shaping plastics and synthetic fibers.
Arthur Dehon Little: An American chemist and chemical engineer who helped develop the concept of unit operations. His work shaped a general framework for analyzing diverse manufacturing processes.
Life-cycle assessment: A method for evaluating environmental impacts across a product’s life, from resource extraction to disposal. It reveals impacts that process-level efficiency alone can miss.
