Chemical evolution

Chemical evolution is the gradual formation and increasing complexity of chemical systems, especially the processes that produced life’s precursors and early living systems from nonliving matter.

Prebiotic chemistry: Chemical reactions occurring under conditions before life, producing compounds relevant to life’s emergence. It studies the reactions that built chemical precursors before biology began.
Nucleobase: A nitrogen-containing molecular component of nucleotides and nucleic acids. Nucleobases are among the molecular units needed for genetic chemistry.
Stanley Miller: An American chemist whose 1953 experiment demonstrated abiotic synthesis of amino acids under simulated early-Earth conditions. His experiment became a landmark test of prebiotic synthesis.
Origin of life: The scientific problem of explaining how life first arose from nonliving matter. Chemical evolution addresses the chemical portion of this broader historical problem.
