Chemical intermediate

A substance formed in one step of a chemical process and consumed or transformed in a later step to make another product.

Reaction mechanism: A step-by-step account of how reactants become products through bond changes. It describes the sequence of elementary steps in which intermediates form and react.
Chemical synthesis: The construction of chemical compounds through one or more reactions. Manufacturing intermediates are successive products in a planned synthetic route.
Chemical reaction: A process in which substances are transformed into different substances through changes in chemical bonds. An intermediate is defined by its role within a reaction or a sequence of reactions.
