Chemical oxygen generator

A device that produces oxygen through chemical reactions, typically by decomposing oxygen-rich compounds or reacting chemicals that release oxygen.

Sodium chlorate: An inorganic salt that decomposes when heated, releasing oxygen and leaving sodium chloride. Its heat-driven decomposition supplies oxygen in many compact generators.
Aircraft chemical oxygen generator: An emergency oxygen device that supplies passengers or crew using a chemical oxygen source. Passenger aircraft commonly use oxygen candles in drop-down emergency masks.

Liquid oxygen: Oxygen cooled below its boiling point so it can be stored as a cryogenic liquid. It stores oxygen compactly but demands insulated vessels and cryogenic handling.
Thermal runaway: A self-accelerating rise in temperature caused when heat generation exceeds heat loss. Uncontrolled reaction heat can intensify oxygen release and damage the generator.
Hydrogen peroxide decomposition: The reaction in which hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen. This reaction provides a direct chemical route to oxygen generation.
Spacecraft life-support system: Equipment that maintains breathable air, water, and other conditions needed by spacecraft occupants. Chemical oxygen generation is one option for supplying oxygen in enclosed spacecraft.
