Knowra Chemical reaction Chemical reaction A process in which substances are transformed into different substances through changes in chemical bonds and electron arrangements. Atoms are rearranged, while their identities are conserved.
Chemical bond : An attractive interaction that holds atoms or ions together in a chemical substance. Reactions transform substances by breaking, forming, or reorganizing these interactions.
Chemical equation : A symbolic representation of reactants, products, and their relative amounts in a chemical reaction. It records the transformation and balances the atoms conserved through it.
Combustion : A rapid exothermic reaction, commonly with oxygen, that releases heat and often light. It converts fuels into products while releasing usable energy.
Physical change : A change in a substance's form or physical properties that does not alter its chemical identity. Unlike a reaction, it need not produce substances with new chemical identities.
Reaction mechanism : A stepwise account of the bond-making and bond-breaking events in a chemical reaction. It describes the sequence of elementary changes behind an overall reaction equation.
Stoichiometry : The quantitative relationships among substances consumed and produced in chemical reactions. It determines reactant proportions and product amounts from a balanced equation.
Acid–base reaction : A reaction involving transfer of a proton or, in broader definitions, electron-pair donation and acceptance. These transformations govern neutralization, buffer behavior, and many solution processes.
Nuclear reaction : A transformation of an atomic nucleus that changes its composition or energy state. Chemical reactions rearrange electrons and bonds; nuclear reactions alter nuclei.
Activation energy : The minimum energy barrier reactants must overcome to reach a reactive configuration. This barrier helps explain why some otherwise favorable reactions proceed slowly.
Molecule : An electrically neutral group of atoms held together by chemical bonds. Molecules are common reactants and products whose atom connections can change.
