Chen dynasty

The Chen dynasty ruled southern China from 557 to 589 as the last of the Southern Dynasties. Sui forces conquered it, ending the era of political division between northern and southern China.

Liang dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled southern China from 502 to 557, preceding the Chen dynasty. Its collapse created the opening in which Chen Baxian established Chen rule.
Emperor Wu of Chen: The posthumous name of Chen Baxian, founder and first emperor of the Chen dynasty. His reign established the court and institutions inherited by later Chen rulers.
Battle of Caishi: A 采石之战 military engagement on the Yangtze during the Sui conquest of the Chen dynasty in 589. Sui forces crossed the river near Caishi, overcoming a key natural defense.
Reunification of China by the Sui dynasty: The Sui dynasty’s restoration of unified rule over China after centuries of political division, completed in 589. Chen’s annexation completed Sui reunification.

Emperor Xuan of Chen: The fourth emperor of the Chen dynasty, ruling from 569 to 582. His reign was Chen’s strongest period and included campaigns against Northern Qi.
Sui conquest of Chen: The Sui campaign that captured Jiankang and annexed Chen territory in 589. The conquest ended Chen rule and brought southern China under Sui control.
Grand Canal of China: A vast system of canals linking northern and southern China, developed across several dynasties. Sui rule connected the former Chen region more closely to northern political and economic centers.
Chen Baxian: The founding emperor of the Chen dynasty, who ruled as Emperor Wu from 557 to 559. His military victories and seizure of the Liang throne founded the dynasty.
Chen Shubao: The last emperor of the Chen dynasty, ruling from 582 until the Sui conquest in 589. His court presided over the dynasty’s final years and the fall of Jiankang.
