Chen Shui-bian

Chen Shui-bian is a Taiwanese politician who served as president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) from 2000 to 2008, ending the Kuomintang’s decades-long hold on the presidency.

Democratic Progressive Party: A Taiwanese political party founded in 1986 that advocates Taiwanese sovereignty and social liberalism. Chen’s presidency began when the party won national executive power for the first time.
Lee Teng-hui: Taiwanese politician who served as president from 1988 to 2000 and oversaw the island’s democratization. Lee’s break with the Kuomintang helped create the political opening Chen later exploited.
Semi-presidential system: A system of government with both a president and a prime minister who share executive authority. Taiwan’s constitutional structure divided executive responsibilities during Chen’s presidency.
