Chen Yun

Chen Yun was a Chinese Communist revolutionary and senior People’s Republic of China leader, known especially for shaping economic policy from 1949 to 1992.

Mao Zedong: Mao Zedong was a Chinese Communist revolutionary who led the People’s Republic of China from its founding until 1976. Chen served under Mao and helped direct the party-state through its founding decades.
Three Red Banners: The Three Red Banners were the General Line, the Great Leap Forward, and the people’s communes, campaigns launched in China in 1958. Chen opposed the campaign’s unrealistic targets and helped retreat from its most damaging policies.
Birdcage economy: The birdcage economy is Chen Yun’s metaphor for allowing markets to operate within boundaries set by state planning. It condenses Chen’s preferred balance: markets could move, but the state set their limits.

Socialist market economy: A socialist market economy combines market allocation with Communist Party leadership and public ownership of key sectors. This later model gave markets a broader formal role than Chen’s birdcage metaphor implied.
Chinese Civil War: The Chinese Civil War was the conflict between Communist and Nationalist forces that culminated in the Communist victory in 1949. Chen’s revolutionary career began before the Communist victory that established the state he later helped govern.
