Chenla

Chenla is a succession of early Khmer polities in mainland Southeast Asia, known chiefly from Chinese records and flourishing from roughly the sixth to ninth centuries.

Funanese polity: An early state or network of polities in the Mekong delta, known from Chinese accounts and archaeological evidence. Chinese sources describe Chenla as succeeding Funan, though the transition was likely gradual.
Isanapura: A seventh-century capital associated with Chenla, generally identified with the Sambor Prei Kuk archaeological complex. It exemplifies the concentration of political and religious authority at a Chenla-period center.
Preah Ko: A temple at Roluos, built in 879 under Indravarman I and dedicated to royal ancestors and Shiva. Its foundation marks the early Angkorian order that followed Chenla's period.
Angkorian Empire: A Khmer empire centered at Angkor that flourished from the ninth to fifteenth centuries. Its better-documented institutions and monuments contrast with Chenla's fragmented evidence.

Kbal Spean: A sandstone riverbed site in Cambodia carved with Hindu imagery and linga, mainly from the Angkorian period. Its ritual landscape shows the enduring Khmer practice of sacralizing water and royal territory.
Khmer Empire: A broad modern name for the succession of Khmer states centered in Cambodia, including the Angkorian Empire. Chenla is often treated as an early phase in the longer history of Khmer state formation.
Isanavarman I: A seventh-century Khmer ruler associated with the foundation or expansion of Isanapura and the cult of Shiva. His reign connects Chenla's political power with the temple complex at Sambor Prei Kuk.
Devaraja cult: A Khmer royal cult linking kingship with a divine or royal linga, especially prominent in later Angkorian tradition. Chenla-period royal temples provide context for the evolving relationship between political rule and Shiva worship.
