Chess

Chess is a two-player strategy game played on an eight-by-eight board with pieces that move in distinct ways. A player wins by checkmating the opponent’s king.

Chess piece: A unit in chess with a defined movement pattern and role on the board. Each piece’s movement rules shape the choices available during a game.
Chessboard: An eight-by-eight grid of alternating light and dark squares used for chess. Its ranks, files, and diagonals organize every legal move.
Chess opening: The initial phase of a chess game, when players develop pieces and contest the center. Opening choices establish the position and plans that shape the middlegame.
Chaturanga: An early Indian strategy game, generally regarded as a predecessor of chess. Its army divisions and board game structure supplied key elements of chess’s ancestry.
Go (game): A two-player board game in which players surround territory by placing stones on a grid. Go uses placement and territorial control rather than moving armies toward a king.
Checkmate: A position in which a king is under attack and cannot escape capture. Checkmate is the game’s central winning condition.
Pawn (chess): The least powerful chess piece, which usually advances one square and captures diagonally. Pawns control space, form structures, and can promote after reaching the far rank.
Chess endgame: The phase of a chess game in which few pieces remain and king activity becomes more important. Endgame technique converts small advantages into wins or saves difficult positions.
Shatranj: A medieval Persian form of chess derived from earlier Indian games. Shatranj carried chess traditions across the Islamic world and into Europe.
Shogi: A Japanese strategy board game in which captured pieces can return to play under the captor’s control. Shogi shares chess’s royal objective but allows captured pieces to change sides.
