Chi Rho

The Chi Rho is an early Christian monogram combining the Greek letters chi and rho, the first two letters of Christos, often arranged as a cross-like emblem.

Christogram: A graphic abbreviation or monogram representing the name of Jesus Christ. The Chi Rho is one of Christianity’s earliest and most recognizable Christograms.
Christos: The Greek form of Christ, meaning “anointed one.” Chi and rho abbreviate the first two letters of this name.
Arch of Constantine: A triumphal arch in Rome dedicated in 315 to commemorate Constantine’s victory over Maxentius. Its inscription names the emperor’s divine inspiration but does not display the Chi Rho, clarifying limits of the evidence.
Christian symbolism: The use of images, objects, and signs to express Christian beliefs and narratives. The monogram became a compact visual sign of Christ and Christian affiliation.

Staurogram: An early Christian monogram combining the Greek letters tau and rho, sometimes interpreted as a representation of the crucified Jesus. It is another letter-based Christian emblem, but uses tau rather than chi.
