Chiang Ching-kuo

Chiang Ching-kuo was president of the Republic of China on Taiwan from 1978 to 1988. His rule combined authoritarian control with reforms that ended martial law and opened politics to greater competition.

Taiwanese democratization: The transition of Taiwan from one-party authoritarian rule to competitive democratic government. His government lifted martial law and permitted opposition parties, accelerating this transition.
Chiang Kai-shek: A Chinese Nationalist leader who governed the Republic of China and led its government to Taiwan after 1949. Chiang Ching-kuo was his son and political heir, succeeding him as Taiwan’s leader.

Democratic Progressive Party: A Taiwanese political party founded in 1986 that became the principal opposition to Kuomintang rule. Its formation under martial law tested Chiang’s decision to tolerate organized opposition.
James Soong: A Taiwanese politician who served as Chiang Ching-kuo’s English-language secretary and later held senior government posts. His work in Chiang’s office connected him to the leader’s late-career political network.
