Chicago Seven

Seven antiwar activists prosecuted for conspiracy and inciting riots after protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Their 1969–1970 trial became a landmark conflict over protest, political dissent, and courtroom conduct.

1968 Democratic National Convention: The 1968 U.S. Democratic Party convention held in Chicago, where antiwar protests met a major police deployment. The protests outside this convention led to the prosecution.
Conspiracy (criminal law): An agreement between two or more people to commit a crime, punishable under applicable criminal law. The government alleged that the defendants conspired to cross state lines to incite a riot.
Abbie Hoffman: An American political activist and Yippie co-founder known for theatrical protest and countercultural politics. His courtroom performances made him one of the trial's most visible defendants.

Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals: The federal appellate court whose jurisdiction includes Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. It reviewed the trial court's convictions and contempt orders.
National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam: A coalition that organized demonstrations against U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. It helped organize the demonstrations that preceded the trial.
Bobby Seale: A Black Panther Party co-founder and political activist who was initially tried alongside the other Chicago defendants. Judge Julius Hoffman's orders to restrain and gag Seale became a defining courtroom episode.
