Chief Justice of the United States

The Chief Justice presides over the U.S. Supreme Court and leads the federal judiciary’s judicial conference and administrative work. The office does not grant authority over other justices’ decisions.

Supreme Court of the United States: The highest court in the federal judiciary, with authority to review cases under the Constitution and federal law. The Chief Justice presides over this court and leads its conferences.
John Jay: An American statesman who served as the first Chief Justice of the United States from 1789 to 1795. Jay helped establish the office and resigned before the Court gained its later prominence.
Article III of the United States Constitution: The constitutional article that establishes the federal judiciary and defines its jurisdiction and protections. It creates the Supreme Court but does not detail the Chief Justice’s administrative responsibilities.
Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States: A Supreme Court justice who serves without the title or responsibilities of Chief Justice. Associate justices have equal authority to decide cases, despite the chief’s presiding and administrative roles.

John Marshall: The fourth Chief Justice, who led the Supreme Court from 1801 to 1835. Marshall strengthened the Court’s institutional authority and shaped the chief’s public role.
Judicial independence: The principle that judges must decide cases free from improper pressure by political branches or other interests. The chief’s administrative leadership operates alongside the decisional independence of every justice.
Chief Justice of a state supreme court: The presiding or administrative leader of a state’s highest court, under that state’s law. State chief justices hold separate offices and do not lead the federal judiciary.
Federal Judicial Center: An agency that conducts research and education for the federal courts. The Chief Justice chairs its board, linking the office to judicial education and research.
Roger B. Taney: The fifth Chief Justice of the United States, serving from 1836 to 1864. Taney’s tenure included the Court’s deeply consequential decision in Dred Scott v. Sandford.
