Chikungunya

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne disease caused by chikungunya virus. It commonly causes fever and severe joint pain, which can persist for months or years.

Chikungunya virus: An alphavirus transmitted mainly by Aedes mosquitoes that causes chikungunya disease. This virus is the infectious agent behind every case of chikungunya.
Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction: A laboratory method that detects RNA by converting it into DNA and amplifying selected sequences. It can detect chikungunya virus during the early, viremic stage of illness.
Tanzania: An East African country where chikungunya was first recognized during an outbreak in 1952–1953. The disease’s name and first documented outbreak trace to this region.
Chronic chikungunya arthritis: Persistent inflammatory joint symptoms following chikungunya infection, sometimes lasting months or years. It describes the prolonged joint disease that can follow the acute illness.
Chikungunya pathogenesis: The biological processes through which chikungunya virus causes tissue injury and disease symptoms. Researchers continue to investigate why joint symptoms can persist after acute infection.
Aedes aegypti: A mosquito species that spreads several human viruses, including chikungunya virus. This urban mosquito is a major vector linking infected people to new cases.

Post-viral syndrome: A collection of persistent symptoms that continue after an acute viral infection has resolved. Chikungunya can leave fatigue and pain after the initial infection has passed.
Chikungunya virus evolution: Genetic changes in chikungunya virus that influence its lineages, adaptation, and spread. Mutations affecting mosquito transmission can alter the risk of future outbreaks.
