Child neglect

Child neglect is a caregiver’s failure to provide a child with necessary care, supervision, or protection, causing or risking harm to the child.

Child maltreatment: Child maltreatment is abuse or neglect by a caregiver or other responsible person that harms or risks harm to a child. Neglect is one major form of child maltreatment, alongside abuse.
Supervision neglect: Supervision neglect is a failure to provide age-appropriate monitoring and protection from foreseeable danger. It captures neglect through unsafe absence or inadequate oversight.
Child protective services: Child protective services are public agencies that investigate suspected child abuse and neglect and arrange protection or support. These agencies commonly assess reports of suspected neglect and coordinate responses.
Childhood trauma: Childhood trauma is a distressing experience in childhood that overwhelms a child's ability to cope or feel safe. Neglect can create prolonged insecurity and unmet needs that children experience as trauma.
Neglect: Neglect is a failure to provide necessary care or attention to a dependent person, thing, or responsibility. Child neglect is the application of this broader idea to children.
Medical neglect: Medical neglect is a caregiver's failure to obtain or follow necessary health care for a child. Unmet treatment needs can threaten health even when other care is adequate.
Mandatory reporting: Mandatory reporting is a legal duty requiring specified people to report suspected abuse or neglect to authorities. Reporting rules determine how concerns about possible neglect enter formal assessment.
Adverse childhood experiences: Adverse childhood experiences are potentially traumatic events and conditions occurring before age eighteen. Neglect is included among the childhood adversities studied in this framework.
Child abuse: Child abuse is the intentional or reckless infliction of physical, sexual, or emotional harm on a child. It is often distinguished from neglect by the presence of harmful acts rather than omitted care.
Educational neglect: Educational neglect is a caregiver's failure to ensure a child receives required education or support for schooling. Persistent absence or unmet learning needs may signal this form of neglect.
