Knowra Childbirth Childbirth Childbirth is the process by which a baby leaves the uterus, through vaginal birth or cesarean section. It includes labor and delivery, followed by the placenta's delivery.
Labor (childbirth) : The process of uterine contractions and cervical changes that leads to delivery of a baby. Labor drives vaginal delivery by opening the cervix and moving the baby through the birth canal.
Midwifery : A profession and model of care focused on pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum recovery, and newborn care. Midwives provide care during labor and birth, often supporting physiologic vaginal delivery.
Uterus : A hollow muscular organ in which an embryo implants and a fetus develops during pregnancy. Its muscular wall contracts to help deliver the baby.
Postpartum hemorrhage : Severe bleeding after childbirth, most often caused by the uterus failing to contract effectively. This urgent complication can occur after delivery and requires prompt treatment.
Vaginal birth : Delivery of a baby through the vagina after labor, whether spontaneous or assisted. It is the route of birth that proceeds through the birth canal.
Cervical dilation : The widening of the cervix, measured during labor as it opens for birth. Full dilation permits the baby to pass from the uterus into the vagina.
Obstetrics : The medical specialty concerned with pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Obstetric practice covers clinical management of childbirth and its complications.
Cervix : The lower, narrow portion of the uterus that opens into the vagina. It softens and dilates to create a passage for vaginal birth.
Perineal tear : A tear in the tissue between the vaginal opening and anus, often occurring during vaginal birth. Vaginal delivery can injure the perineum, with severity affecting repair and recovery.
Assisted vaginal delivery : Vaginal delivery aided by instruments such as forceps or a vacuum extractor. It can help complete vaginal birth when pushing or fetal progress is difficult.
