Childlessness

Childlessness is the state of having no children, whether by choice or circumstance. It can describe an individual or a population.

Voluntary childlessness: The condition of having no children by deliberate choice. It identifies childlessness as an intentional life course rather than an unmet goal.
Fertility: The capacity to produce offspring, measured biologically or as a population rate. Biological fertility affects whether intended parenthood results in children.
Life course: The sequence of socially and historically shaped stages and transitions across a person's life. Childlessness can be temporary, lifelong, or revised as intentions and circumstances change.
Pronatalism: The belief that parenthood and childbearing are desirable or socially preferred. Pronatalist expectations can frame childlessness as a deviation from a presumed life course.
Involuntary childlessness: The condition of having no children despite wanting or intending to become a parent. It distinguishes childlessness shaped by barriers or circumstance from a chosen outcome.
Contraception: Methods or devices used to prevent pregnancy. Reliable contraception can make remaining childless an intentional outcome.
Total fertility rate: An estimate of the number of children a woman would have if current age-specific fertility rates persisted. Population-level fertility rates reflect childbearing patterns, but do not directly measure childlessness.
Stigma: A social process that devalues people because of an attribute or identity. People without children may face judgment or assumptions about their motives and lives.
Infertility: A disease of the reproductive system characterized by failure to achieve pregnancy after a period of regular unprotected sex. Infertility can contribute to involuntary childlessness, but the two conditions are not equivalent.
Assisted reproductive technology: Medical procedures that handle eggs, sperm, or embryos to help achieve pregnancy. These treatments can alter the path from involuntary childlessness to parenthood.
