Chinese American history

Chinese American history traces migration, community life, exclusion, political struggle, and cultural change among people of Chinese descent in the United States.

California Gold Rush: A major gold rush in California that began in 1848 and drew migrants from around the world. Gold discoveries helped attract Chinese migrants to California in the mid-nineteenth century.
Wong Kim Ark: A San Francisco-born Chinese American whose birthright citizenship case reached the U.S. Supreme Court in 1898. His case established a landmark interpretation of citizenship under the Fourteenth Amendment.
Page Act of 1875: A federal law that barred entry by people deemed to be contract laborers or women brought for prostitution. Its enforcement sharply restricted Chinese women's immigration before the Chinese Exclusion Act.
United States v. Wong Kim Ark: An 1898 Supreme Court decision holding that most people born in the United States acquire citizenship at birth. The decision secured birthright citizenship for children of Chinese immigrants.
Model minority: A stereotype portraying Asian Americans as uniformly successful, self-reliant, and academically accomplished. The stereotype obscures differences within Chinese American communities and can be used to dismiss structural inequality.
Transcontinental Railroad: The first railway line across the United States, completed in 1869. Chinese workers built much of the Central Pacific Railroad through the Sierra Nevada.
Yick Wo: A Chinese laundry owner whose 1886 Supreme Court case challenged discriminatory enforcement of a San Francisco ordinance. The ruling affirmed that equal protection applies to people regardless of citizenship.
Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association: A federation of Chinese community organizations that represented local communities and provided services. Associations helped immigrants navigate disputes, welfare, and relations with authorities.
Magnuson Act: A 1943 law that repealed Chinese exclusion while allowing only a small annual immigration quota from China. It formally ended exclusion but left immigration tightly restricted.
Anti-Chinese sentiment in the United States: Hostility and discrimination directed at Chinese people and people perceived to be Chinese in the United States. Its recurring forms link nineteenth-century exclusion to contemporary suspicion and harassment.
