Chinese checkers

Chinese checkers is a strategy board game for two to six players, who race colored pieces across a star-shaped board to occupy the opposite corner.

Halma: A board game in which players move pieces across a square grid into the opposite corner. Chinese checkers adapts Halma’s race-to-the-opposite-side objective to a star-shaped board.
Game board: A surface or arrangement of spaces on which a board game is played. The board’s connected spaces define every legal route between the six points.
Stern-Halma: A German board game introduced in 1892 that uses a star-shaped board and pieces that jump. Chinese checkers developed from this star-board game, rather than originating in China.
Chinese checkers variant: A rule or format variation of Chinese checkers that changes how pieces move or how victory is determined. Variants alter the basic race while retaining the star board and jumping movement.
Move (board game): A move is a player's permitted change to a game's position or state. A turn allows one adjacent step or a jump over another piece.
Star board: A board layout with a central region and projecting arms arranged in a star shape. Its six arms provide starting and destination areas for the pieces.
George Howard Monks: An American surgeon and game designer associated with the invention of Halma. Monks’s Halma supplied the earlier game concept adapted into Stern-Halma.
English draughts: A two-player game in which diagonal movement and captures occur on a checkerboard. Unlike Chinese checkers, draughts uses captures and has no opposite-corner race.
Jumping (board game): A board-game move that passes over one or more intervening pieces or spaces. A piece may jump over an adjacent piece into the empty space beyond it.
Marble (playing piece): A small spherical playing piece used in many board games. Colored marbles are the conventional pieces moved across Chinese checkers boards.
