Chinese democracy movement

The Chinese democracy movement is a diverse set of movements advocating political reform and democratic rights in China, including freedoms of speech, association, and political participation.

May Fourth Movement: A 1919 Chinese cultural and political movement that opposed imperialism and promoted national renewal and social change. Its calls for political and cultural renewal helped shape later reformist currents.
Wei Jingsheng: A Chinese dissident who called for a Fifth Modernization—democracy—and was imprisoned for his political writing. His Democracy Wall-era essay made democratic rule a direct public demand.
