Chinese immigration to the United States

Chinese immigration to the United States is the movement of people from China to the country, expanding significantly during the California Gold Rush and shaped by labor demand, exclusion laws, and family migration.

California Gold Rush: A major gold rush in California beginning in 1848 that drew migrants from around the world. Its labor demand and reports of opportunity helped spur migration from China.
Yick Wo: A Chinese laundry operator in San Francisco whose 1886 Supreme Court case challenged discriminatory enforcement of a local ordinance. His case established that equal-protection safeguards apply to noncitizens.
Chinese railroad workers: Chinese laborers who built much of the Central Pacific Railroad across the Sierra Nevada and western United States. Their work made Chinese migrants central to national infrastructure while exposing them to dangerous conditions.
Gentlemen's Agreement of 1907: An informal agreement under which Japan restricted passports for laborers traveling to the United States, while the United States limited Japanese immigration. It applied a distinct bilateral restriction to Japanese migration after Chinese exclusion.
