Chinese political thought encompasses ideas about government, authority, society, and political order developed in China, from ancient doctrines to modern political theories.

Confucianism: An ethical and political tradition centered on ritual, humaneness, learning, and cultivated relationships. Its account of moral leadership and social hierarchy became a lasting framework for Chinese governance.
Junzi: The cultivated exemplary person who embodies ethical judgment and proper conduct in Confucian thought. The ideal ruler and official was expected to govern by the virtues cultivated by a junzi.
Qin dynasty: The first imperial dynasty of a unified China, ruling from 221 to 206 BCE. Qin unification put centralized institutions and Legalist statecraft into practice on an imperial scale.
Mencius: A Confucian philosopher who argued that human nature tends toward goodness and rulers must care for the people. His account of humane rule and the people’s importance sharpened Confucian arguments about legitimate authority.
Legalism: A tradition of statecraft emphasizing clear laws, administrative methods, and concentrated sovereign power. It offers a contrasting account of order grounded in institutions and enforcement rather than moral example.
Rectification of Names: The principle that names and social roles should correspond to the conduct and responsibilities they imply. It links political order to officials and rulers fulfilling the roles their titles prescribe.
Han dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled from 206 BCE to 220 CE and consolidated the imperial state. Han rulers blended centralized administration with Confucian learning and political legitimacy.
Xunzi: A Confucian philosopher who argued that human nature requires deliberate cultivation through ritual and education. His emphasis on discipline and institutions complicates the tradition’s more optimistic account of human nature.
Daoism: A Chinese philosophical tradition exploring the Dao, natural transformation, and ways of living with minimal coercion. Its ideal of non-coercive rule challenges the activist governance favored by other schools.
Filial piety: A duty of respect and care toward parents and ancestors, central to traditional Chinese ethics. Its family hierarchy supplied a model for broader social and political relationships.
