Chinese Soviet Republic

The Chinese Soviet Republic was a communist-led state proclaimed in Jiangxi in 1931 and governed by the Chinese Communist Party. Nationalist encirclement campaigns forced its main forces to retreat in 1934, beginning the Long March.

Chinese Communist Party: The political party founded in 1921 that established the People’s Republic of China in 1949. The party organized the republic’s government, army, and political campaigns.
Chinese Civil War: The prolonged conflict between the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang over control of China. The republic arose during the civil war’s first phase and became a major Communist base.
Zhu De: A Chinese communist military leader who helped build the Red Army and later became a senior state leader. Zhu joined Mao’s forces in the early base area and became a central military commander.
Long March: The 1934–1935 strategic retreat in which Communist forces crossed China to escape Nationalist encirclement. The republic’s collapse forced its main army to begin this retreat.
Mao Zedong: A Chinese communist revolutionary who led the People’s Republic of China from its founding until 1976. Mao emerged as a leading figure in the Jiangxi base and its military strategy.
First United Front: An alliance between the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang, formed in 1924 against warlordism and imperialism. Its collapse in 1927 drove Communists toward armed rural bases.
Zhou Enlai: A Chinese Communist leader who served as premier of the People’s Republic of China from 1949 to 1976. Zhou held senior party and political roles during the Jiangxi Soviet period.
Zunyi Conference: A January 1935 Chinese Communist Party meeting that reassessed military leadership during the Long March. The conference followed the Jiangxi retreat and strengthened Mao’s influence.
Red Army (China): The armed forces organized by the Chinese Communist Party before the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. Its units defended the republic and later began the Long March.
Shanghai massacre of 1927: The April 1927 purge in which Kuomintang forces and allies killed and arrested Communists and labor activists in Shanghai. The massacre marked the violent breakdown of the Communist-Nationalist alliance.
