Chinese units of measurement

Chinese units of measurement are customary and metric units used in China for length, area, mass, volume, and other quantities. Traditional units coexist with the metric system, often through standardized modern definitions.

Chinese foot: A traditional Chinese unit of length, commonly called chi, whose standardized value has varied by period and system. The chi is the central traditional length unit, with modern versions defined in metric terms.
Chinese weights and measures: The historical systems by which Chinese states defined and regulated units of measurement. These systems shaped the units and changing standards later inherited by modern China.
Chinese land measurement: The measurement and recording of land area in China using units such as the mu and hectare. The mu remains common in land reporting despite metric units being official.
International System of Units: The internationally standardized system of measurement based on seven defining units. It is the formal metric framework against which modern Chinese units are defined.
Chinese mile: A Chinese unit of distance, traditionally equal to 1,800 chi and standardized in modern China as 500 meters. The li shows how a traditional distance unit received a fixed modern metric value.
Qin Shi Huang: The first emperor of a unified China, who standardized weights and measures during the Qin dynasty. Qin unification made measurement standardization a tool of centralized rule.
Chinese market weights: The units and practices used to weigh goods in Chinese retail and wholesale markets. Market transactions often use jin and liang as familiar mass units.
Japanese units of measurement: Traditional and modern units used in Japan, including units historically related to Chinese measures. Japanese systems share historical roots but developed distinct names and standardized values.
Chinese unit of area: A traditional Chinese unit of land area, standardized in mainland China as 666⅔ square meters. The mu remains a practical land-area measure alongside hectares and square meters.
Qin dynasty: The Chinese dynasty that unified China from 221 to 206 BCE and imposed administrative standards. Its standardization of measures established an influential precedent for later governments.
