Chloral hydrate

Chloral hydrate is the crystalline hydrate of trichloroacetaldehyde, historically used as a sedative and hypnotic and also as a chemical reagent.

Trichloroacetaldehyde: Trichloroacetaldehyde, also called chloral, is a halogenated aldehyde that forms chloral hydrate when hydrated. It is the parent aldehyde formed as chloral hydrate is metabolized.
Justus von Liebig: Justus von Liebig was a German chemist whose laboratory helped establish modern organic chemistry. His laboratory prepared chloral in 1832, before its later medical use.
