Chlordiazepoxide
Chlordiazepoxide is a long-acting benzodiazepine medication used to treat anxiety and alcohol withdrawal. It can also relieve anxiety before surgery.
GABA-A receptor: A ligand-gated chloride channel in the nervous system that mediates much of the neurotransmitter GABA’s fast inhibitory effect. Chlordiazepoxide enhances this receptor’s response to GABA, reducing neuronal excitability.
Alcohol withdrawal syndrome: A set of symptoms that can occur when a person who is physically dependent on alcohol reduces or stops drinking. Chlordiazepoxide is used to reduce withdrawal symptoms and help prevent severe complications.
Diazepam: A long-acting benzodiazepine used for anxiety, seizures, muscle spasms, and alcohol withdrawal. It is another long-acting benzodiazepine commonly used in alcohol withdrawal protocols.
Leo Sternbach: A chemist who led the discovery and development of benzodiazepine drugs at Hoffmann-La Roche. His research produced chlordiazepoxide, the first benzodiazepine introduced into clinical use.
Positive allosteric modulator: A substance that binds away from a receptor’s main binding site and strengthens the effect of another ligand. This describes how chlordiazepoxide increases GABA-A receptor activity without directly activating the receptor.
Benzodiazepine withdrawal: A group of symptoms that may follow abrupt reduction or cessation of prolonged benzodiazepine use. Its withdrawal risks differ from its use to manage alcohol withdrawal.
Lorazepam: A benzodiazepine used for anxiety, seizures, and alcohol withdrawal, with no active metabolites. Its metabolism can make it preferable to chlordiazepoxide in some patients with liver impairment.
Hoffmann-La Roche: A Swiss pharmaceutical company that developed and marketed several influential medicines, including early benzodiazepines. The company developed chlordiazepoxide as part of its benzodiazepine research program.
Active metabolite: A product of drug metabolism that retains pharmacological activity in the body. Chlordiazepoxide forms active metabolites that contribute to its prolonged effects.
Anxiety disorder: A mental disorder involving excessive fear, anxiety, or related behavioral disturbances that impair functioning. Chlordiazepoxide has been used for short-term relief of anxiety symptoms.
