Knowra Chlorodifluoromethane Chlorodifluoromethane Chlorodifluoromethane, or HCFC-22, is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon with formula CHClF₂. It was widely used as a refrigerant and as a feedstock for fluoropolymer production.
Refrigeration : The process of removing heat from an enclosed space or substance to keep it cool. HCFC-22 served as a refrigerant in domestic, commercial, and industrial cooling systems.
Hydrochlorofluorocarbon : A compound containing hydrogen, chlorine, fluorine, and carbon, developed partly as a transitional refrigerant class. HCFC-22 belongs to this class of partly hydrogenated chlorofluorocarbons.
Thomas Midgley Jr. : An American engineer associated with the development and promotion of leaded gasoline and early refrigerants. His work helped establish the broader synthetic-refrigerant industry in which HCFC-22 emerged.
Kigali Amendment : A 2016 amendment to the Montreal Protocol that phases down the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons. Its controls address high-warming replacements used as HCFC-22 is phased out.
Air conditioning : The control of indoor temperature, humidity, and air quality. HCFC-22 became a common working fluid in air-conditioning equipment.
Refrigerant : A working fluid that absorbs heat during evaporation and releases it during condensation. HCFC-22 cools by circulating through a vapor-compression refrigeration cycle.
Chlorofluorocarbon : A compound composed of carbon, chlorine, and fluorine, widely used historically as a refrigerant and propellant. HCFC-22 contains hydrogen, unlike fully halogenated CFC refrigerants, and generally has lower ozone-depletion potential.
R-410A : A blend of hydrofluorocarbons R-32 and R-125 used as a refrigerant. R-410A replaced HCFC-22 in many newer air-conditioning systems but has a higher global warming potential.
Fluoropolymer : A polymer whose molecular structure contains fluorine atoms. HCFC-22 is a chemical feedstock for producing fluoropolymers.
Vapor-compression refrigeration : A refrigeration cycle that moves heat using a circulating refrigerant, compressor, condenser, and evaporator. This cycle made HCFC-22 useful in cooling equipment.
